If someone were to ask for a home address, they would probably expect
a street, apartment, city, state, and zip code. That”s all the
information the post office needs to deliver mail in a reasonably
speedy fashion. Likewise, computer addresses have a structure to
them. The general form is:

_A._–In starting from a station, and also in ascending inclined planes,
the feed water is generally shut off; and therefore before stopping or
ascending inclined planes, the boiler should be well filled up with water.
In descending inclined planes an extra supply of water may be introduced
into the boiler, and the fire may be fed, as there, is […]

DANGER TO THE PILOT

Monday, June 30th, 2008

DANGER TO THE PILOT.–The great danger to the
pilot, in all cases of accidents, lies in the
overturning of the machine. Many have had accidents
where the machine landed right side up, even
where the fall was from a great height, and the
only damage to the aviator was bruises. Few, if
any, pilots have escaped where the machine has
overturned.

EFFECT OF INCREASING PROPELLER PULL

Monday, June 30th, 2008

EFFECT OF INCREASING PROPELLER PULL.–If the
present pull could be doubled what a wonderful
revolution would take place in aerial navigation,
and if it were possible to get only a quarter of
the effective pull of an engine, the results would
be so stupendous that the present method of flying
would seem like child”s play in comparison.

It may be assumed, therefore, that the shape
alone does not account for this sinuous motion;
but that speed is the element which accounts for
it. Such being the case it may be well to inquire
into the peculiar action which causes a skipper
to […]

_A._–I will take for this purpose the locomotive Snake, constructed by
John V. Gooch for the London and South Western Railway, as an example of a
modern locomotive of good construction, adapted for the narrow gauge. The
length of the wheel base of this engine is 12 feet 8-1/2 inches. There are
two cylinders, each 14-1/4 inches diameter and […]

THE CELLULAR KITE

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

THE CELLULAR KITE.–Following out the suggestion
of the Hargreaves kite, numerous forms
embodying the principle of the box structure were
made and put on the market before the aeroplane
became a reality.

_A._–If the cock of the cataract be shut, it is clear that the plunger
cannot descend at all, and as in that case the injection valve cannot be
opened, the engine must stand still; but if the cock be slightly opened,
the plunger will descend slowly, the injection valve will slowly open, and
the engine will make a gradual […]

A NON-CHANGING BODY

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

A NON-CHANGING BODY.–We may contrast the
foregoing instances of flight with a machine having
the sustaining planes hinged to the body in
such a manner as to make the disposition of its
angles synchronous with the tail. In other words,
see how a machine acts that has the angle of flight
controllable by both planes,–that is, the sustaining
planes, as well as […]
